General Information: Mullein, scientifically known as Verbascum thapsus, is a biennial plant native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, but it has been naturalized in many other regions around the world. It is characterized by its tall, erect stem, large velvety leaves, and yellow flowers that bloom in the second year of growth. Mullein has a long history of traditional use for various medicinal purposes.
Medicinal Use: Mullein has been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries due to its potential health benefits. Some of its traditional uses include: Respiratory Support: Mullein is perhaps best known for its use in supporting respiratory health. It is believed to have expectorant and soothing properties, making it useful for conditions such as coughs, bronchitis, asthma, and congestion. Mullein is often used in herbal teas, tinctures, or steam inhalations to help alleviate respiratory symptoms. Ear Health: Mullein oil, made by infusing mullein flowers in olive oil, has been traditionally used to soothe earaches and ear infections. A few drops of warmed mullein oil can be gently applied to the outer ear canal for relief. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Mullein has been reported to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may make it beneficial for conditions such as sore throat, swollen glands, and inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Diuretic Effects: Some herbalists suggest that mullein may have diuretic effects, meaning it may help increase urine production and promote detoxification.
How to Use: One of the most common ways to use mullein is by brewing it into a tea. To make mullein tea, steep dried mullein leaves or flowers in hot water for about 10-15 minutes, then strain and drink. Mullein tea can be consumed up to three times a day, especially when experiencing respiratory symptoms. Steam Inhalation: For respiratory conditions, inhaling steam infused with mullein leaves or flowers can help soothe congestion and alleviate respiratory symptoms. Add dried mullein leaves or flowers to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam for several minutes. Tincture: Mullein can also be prepared as a tincture by steeping the dried leaves or flowers in alcohol to extract their medicinal compounds. The tincture can be taken orally, usually diluted in water or juice.
