General Information: Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a perennial plant native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It's part of the Artemisia genus, which includes a variety of aromatic plants known for their medicinal and culinary uses. Mugwort has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Asian and European herbal traditions.
Medicinal Use: Topical Applications: Mugwort can be infused into oils or lotions for topical use. It's believed to have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties and may be used for skin conditions such as eczema or acne. Tea: Mugwort tea is a popular preparation. To make mugwort tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried mugwort herb cut in hot water for 5-10 minutes, then strain and drink. Mugwort tea is believed to have a variety of potential health benefits, including digestive support, relaxation, and menstrual support.
How to Use: It can be brewed into tea by steeping 1–2 teaspoons of dried leaves in boiling water for 5–10 minutes, which is believed to support digestion, ease menstrual discomfort, and promote relaxation. Dried mugwort can also be bundled into smudge sticks for burning to purify spaces and enhance intuition or dreams. For dreamwork, placing dried leaves or an herb-infused pillow under your pillow is said to encourage vivid dreams and improve recall. Adding mugwort to a warm bath is thought to relieve muscle tension and support menstrual health, while a tincture of the herb, taken in small doses, can aid digestion or alleviate mild anxiety. In some cultures, its young leaves are used as a flavoring in soups, stews, or rice cakes. However, mugwort should be avoided during pregnancy, as it may stimulate uterine contractions, and those with ragweed allergies or on medication should consult a healthcare provider before use.
