- Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is a plant native to southern Africa. It has a long history of traditional use in African medicine, particularly among the San and Khoi peoples, for its potential health benefits. Devil's claw gets its name from the appearance of its fruit, which has hook-like projections resembling claws.
- Recomended Use Medicinal Use: Devil's claw is primarily used for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. It contains active compounds such as iridoid glycosides, harpagoside, and harpagide, which are believed to contribute to its therapeutic effects. Devil's claw is often used to help alleviate joint pain, muscle pain, arthritis, rheumatism, and other inflammatory conditions. It may also have digestive benefits and is sometimes used to support gastrointestinal health. Tea: While less common, devil's claw can be prepared as a tea for internal use. Devil's claw tea is typically made by steeping dried devil's claw root in hot water for several minutes. However, the taste of devil's claw tea is quite bitter, so it may be mixed with other herbs or sweeteners to improve its palatability. Topical Products: Devil's claw is also used in topical formulations such as creams, gels, and ointments. These products are applied directly to the skin over affected areas to help relieve pain, stiffness, and inflammation in muscles and joints. Topical devil's claw preparations may be used alone or in combination with other ingredients known for their analgesic or anti-inflammatory properties.
