General Information: Birch trees, belonging to the genus Betula, are deciduous trees native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are known for their distinctive bark, which varies in color from white to silver and black, depending on the species. Birch trees have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in cultures where they are indigenous, for their medicinal properties and practical applications.
Medicinal Use: Various parts of the Birch tree, including the bark, leaves, and sap, have been utilized for their medicinal properties. Birch is rich in bioactive compounds such as betulin, betulinic acid, and flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. Birch preparations have been used traditionally to alleviate conditions such as arthritis, urinary tract infections, and skin disorders.
How to Use: Birch can be used in different forms, including teas, tinctures, and topical applications. To make Birch tea, steep dried Birch leaves or bark in hot water for about 10-15 minutes, then strain and drink. For a tincture, soak Birch bark in alcohol for several weeks, then strain the liquid. Example: To make Birch tea, add 1-2 teaspoons of dried Birch leaves or bark to a cup of hot water, cover, and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Drink up to three cups daily for desired effects.
